Perspectives on Egypt
If you ever visit Aswan, Egypt’s southern most city, consider my travel tip #112: Stay at the Keylany Hotel. It’s a cheap hotel as are most hotels in Egypt, $15 per person per night, centrally located to the bazaar, train station and the Nile. The friendly and attentive reception staff booked our tour of Abu Simbel which included a take-away breakfast on the mini-bus (cheese, bread, jam). We befriended fellow travelers from all around the globe, including the US, Hong Kong and Greece, on a tour of southern Egypt. Arnold and his family from Colorado recommended a bakery and some eateries to try as we planned to depart Aswan the following morning by train on our way north to Luxor. Jackie and David, from Hong Kong, joined us for Egyptian style pizza near the train station, a stroll through the bazaar and then for wine (compliments of Arnold) on the roof of our hotel after dinner.
We bumped into Kristos and Xena from Greece, whom we met on the Abu Simbel tour, in Luxor and shared a nice dinner and moonlight walk back to the ferry along the Nile. Which leads me to Travel Tip #113. Have dinner with friends at Menmon Restaurant in Luxor. Without planning it, May and I met up with David and Jackie in Luxor, which was a five-hour train ride north of Aswan. This photo (David, May, Said, Arlyn and Jackie) is taken by the amazing David Cheng during a fabulous dinner on the evening of January 6th, 2011, with Said, our host.

In Egypt, I loved that I got to experience a bit of chaos and calmness. I was able to absorb the exuberant city life in Cairo while discovering the serenity in Aswan and especially in Luxor. While exploring all that Egypt had to offer with its historical & timeless sites such as the pyramids, Abu Simbel, and Valley of the Kings just to name a few, we also came across other travelers who became wonderful friends. David and Jackie from Hong Kong for instance. It’s amazing to make lifelong friends in a whole new country. Also as it is with all traveling, it’s more memorable when you are connected with the locals and the welcoming of them toward us…that is what I truly felt while in Luxor. The place and people in Menmon Restaurant made it special for me to want to go back. So a special shout out to Sayed and his brother. Thank you for making Egypt a wonderful place in my heart.

This is my first time to visit Egypt. Egypt is really amazing and it has a long history of culture and has much valuable heritage. I loved it very much. During the vacation, Jackie and I have visited Aswan, Abu Simbel, Luxor, Cairo and Mt. Sinai. The most impressive for me was Mt Sinai. We joined the local tour to climb the mountain at midnight and then reach the top to see the sunrise. The landscape is very excellent! Besides, I liked Luxor too. The place was not much special but we met travellers May and Arlyn there! It makes the trip much more wonderful and those precious memories were unforgotable to me. Remember that we dated to have dinner in West Bank of Luxor via many emails (no mobile contact). It was quite funny. We now becomes friends and keep in touch. And, the most disappointing for me was the Pyramid in Cairo. Although it is the one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, I had bad feelings on it. The local people were very annoying and dishonest nearby the pyramid and the air is very polluted. But anyway, if you like traveling, Egypt should be the place that you cannot miss!
