Following the sun around the world

I received an email from a friend who wrote that it must have cost a fortune to “just pick up and go” on this trip to Egypt. I replied back, “If not now then when?” Egypt is a very inexpensive country to travel. The most expensive part was the airfare because we traveled during the Christmas season. Airfare anywhere would have been high. Obviously if you’re trying to cut costs don’t go the day after Christmas like we did.

The lodging and meals were inexpensive. Hotels averaged about $30 per person per day. From reading on where to stay and what to see, books and online forums helped. Breakfast was included with each of our stays. And eating around a food stall costs less than a dollar. Sometimes we’d ask the hotel to recommend an eatery and other times we’d get a recommendation from other travelers.

A special thanks to Arnold and his family from Colorado, who we met on a day tour in Aswan, for recommending El Abd Bakery, Gad and Menmon Restaurants.

May suggested we take the three hour train ride for $8 from Aswan to Luxor which I’m glad we did. We got to see the countrysides and be where the locals were, although it was a bit cold and I thought I’d freeze before arriving in Cairo.

So where are you going next? For me possibly Greece, Turkey or Lebanon.

Greece after we met a couple of Greeks in Aswan and then shared a wonderful dinner in Luxor talking about the beautiful islands of Greece.

Turkey after admiring a friend’s Turkish coffee photos on Flickr.

Lebanon because Holly once said she would return home to visit and perhaps I could go with her.
